WHEYTORADE
A Viable Endurox Substitute at 1/6th the Cost / 8 0z. Serving
From: Rabbi Stanley R. Gerstein, Chaplain (COL) USAR, Ret.:

Age 66. Began cycling 12 months ago owing to deteriorated medial meniscus in knee caused by 50 years of long distance competition running. I ride a Titanflex bicycle approx. 150 miles/week March-November. Blood pressure and cholesterol way down and best of all no pain after 3-hour workouts. Should have switched to cycling years ago! I use Endurox and can attest to the claimed results but owing to the high cost I developed my own similar formula at far less cost:

I tried Endurox and found it works very well. The only drawback is the cost: approximately $38 for 28 eight-ounce servings - $1.27/serving. After reading "The Performance Zone" by Drs. Ivy and Portman, which came with an Endurox and Accelerade buy, I was convinced that the 4:1 carbohydrate to protein ratio is the secret of both products. After checking the labels on Endurox and powdered Gatorade mix, I found that I could mix powdered whey and Gatorade to get the same formula as Endurox at 1/6th the cost. Side benefit: The vanilla-ice crème flavored whey mellows out the biittersweetness of the Gatorade which so many find objectionable. So here's my recipe. Try it; I think you'll like it:

1/2 scoop powdered whey. I used "Optimum Nutrition", $22.50 for 5 lbs. but they're all about the same. Add 2 1/4 scoops powdered Gatorade ($4 for an 18 oz. jar at Hannaford. Probably could save even more by getting it in 5 lb containers at BJ's or Wal-Mart.) Mix well with blender in 24 ounces of water giving you:

Carbohydrates: 52 grams
Protein: 11.5 grams (4.51:1)
Sodium : 350 mg
Potassium: 160 mg
Sugars: 45 grams
L-Glutamine: 1.75 grams
Calcium : 80 mg
BCAA's: 2.5 grams (branched chain amino acids: leucine, isoleucine and valine - synthesizes muscle protein following exercise)

For your comparison one 8 oz serving of Endurox contains the following:

Carbohydrates: 52 grams
Protein: 13 grams (4:1)
Sodium: 210 mg
Potassium: 120 mg
Sugars: 40 grams
L-Glutamine: 2.6 mg
Calcium: 470 mg
BCAA's: 2.7 grams

P.S. IMPROVE YOUR BIKE BOTTLE: Here's another tip free of charge; so simple I am sure someone probably thought of it before. You know how ANNOYING it is to get more than one or two swallows of fluid from your bike bottle without removing it from your lips? Well, that's because you have to take the bottle away from your lips for a second or two, to let new air flow into the spout. By simply holding a pin with a pair of pliers, heating up the tip red hot over a gas or match flame, and plunging it into the top of the cap, you make a .0025cm hole allowing the air to come in while you are drinking. This will allow you to continue drinking without removing the bottle from your lips to take in more air. It saves vital seconds and makes drinking a pleasure instead of a pain.
